My research focus is aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, with a special emphasis on the complication of delayed cerebral ischemia. For decades, this complication has been attributed to vasospasm. However, evidence is mounting that the pathogenesis of delayed cerebral ischemia is multifactorial. Microthrombosis, as a result of activated coagulation and inhibited fibrinolysis, is a plausible alternative hypothesis for the pathogenesis of delayed cerebral ischemia. During my postdoc, which is funded by the Dutch Thrombosis Foundation, I will further investigate the pathogenesis and role of microthrombosis in the development of delayed cerebral ischemia.
